VISION 2023

State Library of Victoria exhibition concept
for Primitive Calculators band

The focus of this project was to represent the music of Primitive Calculators visually. Initial graphic references and exploration included digital type and how numbers can be used in place of letters, how mediums such as paint or ripped paper can be used to create dimension, the open mouth, music strings and soundwaves. Whilst key graphic elements such as the mouth illustrations have been hand-drawn using charcoal and then digitally converted and applied, one of the main focal points of this project remains in the design of the exhibition’s title ‘W0RK7N6 1T 0UT’. The typeface used for the exhibition name has been constructed by stamping matchsticks with black paint.
In doing so, the goal was to create a digital-style typeface that was reminicent of the kind of font you would see on a calculator. When paired with a series of numbers which have been used to replace eligable letters, the thin, linear typeface contributes to a design that has been strongly inspired by the band’s name ‘Primitive Calculators’. The messy spots of paint surrounding the type also combine perfectly to establish a rough, grungy aesthetic that falls in line with the band’s overall vibe which has been described by critics as an “aggressive suicide”.
