SOUNDING TYPE
Musical identity for The GoodThe Bad The Ugly song
The song featured in this project is ‘The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly’ by Ennio Morricone. The song slowly builds tension through its
repetitive, brooding nature. Whilst a subtly aggressive or intimidating mood is created through the
inclusion of beating drums, the song also holds a slightly more upbeat and comedic feel due to the playful
harmonica tune that follows. Initial visualisation brainstorms for this project explored Wild West themes of glaring eyes, cowboys, horses, cacti, tumbleweeds and whistling wind.
The text featured on the final outcomes titled ‘Playbill’ is a classic Wild-West typeface. To heighten the feeling of tension, the type has been manipulated in a way that represents the darting back and forth glares of a mexican stand off. Doing this involved the creation of a zig-zag effect which was achieved by placing each line of text on an opposing angle. Thin cut outs were also added through the type which helps to bring a more jarring and intense feel to the design.
