SENSE OF PLACE
Identity system for Byron Bay
centred around tourism
LOGO
Consisting of a white font and handrawn outline of the bay, the primary logo addresses Byron Bay’s mission to honour the origins of the town. Both the silhouette of the bay and the font, which is largely inspired by the typeface Fino Sans (Bold), have been reproduced using Photoshop’s “KYLE Ultimate Inking Thick ‘n Thin” brush stroke. The addition of this rough and imperfect brush stroke adds a sense of character to the design which helps to steer the brand away from commercialism and more towards its charming origins.

POSTCARD
For many, the Byron Bay experience is a once in a lifetime opportunity. Because of this, is is essential that the new brand identity system supports the concept of memory making. With this in mind, it is important for the brand to take on applications such as postcards, which can be kept as keepsakes or sent to family and friends back home. The format of postcards provides the perfect opportunity to showcase the wonders of Byron Bay with one whole side dedicated purely to imagery.
This is a prime example of where the brand’s primary and secondary imagery comes into consideration. Whilst postcards may slowly be becoming a thing of the past, they create the perfect opportunity for Byron Bay to remain in touch with its past. Through carrying on the tradition of postcards and other souvenirs, the classic and charming coastal town vibe of the bay will remain.

WASTAGE SYSTEM
With such an emphasis on the beauty
of Byron Bay, it is important that the town has adequate and equally
appealing wastage systems in place.
Currently, the Byron Bay council is
working on a number of different
initiatives such as Take 3 for the Sea
Byron. This concept is all about taking action and leveraging the positive
power of over two million visitors
alongside the Byron community to
preserve the town’s natural beauty through simple action.
All this initiative asks is for people to simply take 3 pieces of rubbish with them when they leave beaches, waterways or natural spaces.
Byron Shire Council has a litter
reduction target of 40 per cent in
volume of litter by the end of 2021.
With this in mind, it is important that the new brand identity system
considers the town’s bins in order
to keep them appealing and readily
available for everyone.

ROADSIGN
A large part of the new Byron Bay
identity system involves establishing
a brand that is welcoming and
inclusive to all.
For years, Byron Bay’s existing welcome sign has acted as the perfect backdrop for holiday photos. Because of this, the new rebrand has considered the
imporance of such a staple amongst the community.
Upon arrival into Byron Bay, the new welcome sign makes use of the
primary logo form by immitating its pointed silhouette shape.
This helps to strengthen the identity of the bay and establish a sense of understanding about the location visitors are entering.
Because it is positioned in an area of high traffic, it is important for Byron Bay’s new welcome sign to not only attract the attention of passers by, but also remain simple yet effective in
communicating its message. With this in mind, a design with limited text and engaging visual elements is required.

SUN SAFE RANGE
With Byron Bay being such a large tourist destination, the importance of sun safety is huge.
In many cases, visitors who are
new to Byron Bay or even Australia
underestimate the Byron sun. To promote education and awareness around sun safety, the brand
identity has been applied to a
sun safe range.
In Australia, it is no secret that the sun is intense and so caution should be taken when spending time
outdoors.
With all the adventure and
exploration prompts included throughout the brand identity,
the importance of sun protection
becomes all the more clear.

WAYFINDING
Wayfinding systems are one of the most
essential elements when it comes
to navigating Byron. Given the
expanse of the bay, it is important
that visitors know exactly where
they are and where they need to
be at all times.
At Byron Bay, signage is a big part
of the exploration experience.
Whether it’s a sign to show you’ve made it to the most easterly point of the Australian mainland or a sign identifying Byron Bay’s national park, each one contributes to ensuring the ease of your travel experience.
Because of this, it is important that
all signage within the region is not only visually concise and imformative, but equally as attention grabbing.
This is necessary in order for these
applications to be accessible to
visitors who may not have strong
English skills. Through this, we aim
to provide a friendly yet informative
addition to the Byron Bay experience for visitors.

Set up in the form of a travel guide, the brochure has the ability to
contain a wide range of information including how to travel to the bay, places to visit, and where to stay.

REUSABLE BAG
Currently, Byron Shire Council have partnered with Plastic Free Byron and The Boomerang Alliance to
develop the ‘Make the Switch’
initiative. The aim of this program is to reduce single-use plastics in Byron.
With a goal to reduce Byron’s
plastic footprint, the Byron Shire
Council is working directly with food businesses and the
comunity to help them switch away from single-use or to more sustainable packaging options.
The town is aiming for a reduction - leading to elimination - of the top six single-use plastic items found in the litter stream: water bottles, straws, coffee cups, takeaway
containers, foodware and plastic bags.
With this in mind, it was important for the new brand identity system to promote the use of reusable bags within the region.
